Advice for
Parents
THEY’RE YOUR
most precious cargo. So
safety is a must when your little ones
come along for a ride. That’s why you’ll
want to learn the latest on car seat advice.
Children should be kept in a
rear-facing car seat until they’re 2 years
old or they reach the manufacturer’s
height or weight limit for the seat, advises
the American Academy of Pediatrics
(AAP). For some children, that may mean
a longer rear-facing ride.
Previously, parents were advised to
wait until their child reached 1 year and
20 pounds before turning a convertible
car seat around, which many parents did
on their child’s first birthday. However,
children are safer when they ride facing the
rear of the car. In a crash, their heads and
spines receive better support. Research
shows this may reduce severe injuries and
deaths by up to 75 percent, the AAP notes.
Other recommendations:
Children who are at least 2 years old or
who have outgrown their rear-facing car
seats should ride in a forward-facing seat
with a harness until they are 4 years old
and 40 pounds.
Once a child reaches 4 years old and
40 pounds, he or she should use a booster
seat until a seat belt fits correctly—which
usually happens when a child is 4 feet
9 inches tall and between 8 and 12 years
old.
Children younger than 13 years should
always ride in the backseat.
